Greely Expedition: Day 83

Day 83: Tuesday, September 27th, 1881

Snowing. The chronograph was set up today and put in the telephone circuit to the observatory. Rice returned from Buchey reporting Lt. Lockwood and party well. Also reports considerable open water in the straights.

Two single bunks put in the quarters today for the use of the Eskimos.

Lt. Lockwood and party returned at 9pm, all the men played out from excessively hard work in hauling the sledge. Ellis who was one of the party is hardly able to walk.

We have had a great innovation today. The change from tin ware to crockery and from the best place we could find to eat our meals, to a table with benches, which is much better than we could find a few days ago.
