Greely Expedition: Day 80

Day 80: Saturday, September 24th, 1881

Fair weather, East wind light.

At 9am, Lt. Lockwood, Sgt. Ralston, Pvts. Ellis, Fredericks, and Buderbick with the English sled started to make a cache at Cape Beechey. They are to pick up the cache of Sgt. Linn and party.

I today connected the observatory (Astronomical) with the quarters, with a line of wire, and set up the telephones. The Eskimo’s experienced a great surprise and created much amusement when allowed to speak through them. They were afraid of the telephones at first, but afterwards they could not talk enough.
