Greely Expedition: Day 79

Day 79: Friday, September 23rd, 1881

Very cold and light East wind.

The doctor today took samples of blood from each one of the members of the Expedition. A small puncture was made in the skin with a lance, just sufficient to draw the blood, then a drop was collected on a microscopic slide (glass) for future or immediate examination.

Lt. Kislinbury and Rice while out hunting found two dead wolves, which had probably been poisoned by eating some of the prepared meat scattered about their haunts by order of Lt. Greely. The wolves were skinned and the meat thrown in the harbor.

Cross is suffering severely from tooth ache and his face is so much swollen that it is hard to recognize.
