Greely Expedition: Day 44

Day 44: Friday, August 19th, 1881

This is our first day at Fort Conger. That being the name our home here is designated. A light snow is falling. Launch commenced to steam up. At 5am, “Proteus” steamed toward the mouth of the harbor, Clay and Star on board.

Lt. Lockwood, with Sgts. Linn and Cross, accompanied the ship about 2 miles with the steam launch; they were forced to return on account of the ice. About 7am the ship got stuck in the ice off Dutch Islands. All hands busily employed at work on the house.
