Greely Expedition: Day 43

Day 43: Thursday, August 18th, 1881

Cloudy and cold. Coaling still continues, will probably finish today. At 9am Corpl. D. C. Star, was ordered to be ready to return to the states on account of ill health being likely to result from the Asthma, with which the Doctor says he is afflicted. He was very sorry to leave, and would have been a good man to work had he stayed.

All hands are busy getting their personal effects ashore, and finishing writing letters in spare moments. Weather cleared up in PM and also turned warm. At 5pm coaling was finished, 130 tons weight having been put ashore. Our tents are pitched and all hands will sleep ashore tonight for the first time.
