Greely Expedition: Day 3

Day 3: Saturday, July 9th, 1881

Heavy sea, and strong N.W. wind. All our party sick, with the exception of Brainard, Rice, Jewell, Cornell, Ryan, Star, and myself. Occasional rain during the day. Fine display of “aurora” reported by Sgt. Jewell. Ship making but 3 knots per hour all day there being a heavy headwind and very ugly sea, which makes it uncomfortable to be on deck as the vessel plunges and rolls considerable and ships a great deal of water.
